:: Action Groups ::
Civic action projects are implemented through WCC “Action Groups.” The focus of each Action Group evolves in response to changing needs. New Action Groups may form as new interests and concerns emerge. The following three Action Groups are in full swing:
The Collaborative Agreement Action Group
The Collaborative Agreement Action Group (CAAG) promotes racial unity and economic justice and has worked to support the Collaborative Agreement. Concerned about the epidemic of violence in our city, members have sought ways of reaching out to youth, parents, and schools, to respond constructively to the wrongdoings in our neighborhoods. The group has hosted a series of “community conversations” between youth and neighborhood activists to create opportunities for exploring youth-adult relationships and building community. Understanding the tragic correlation between street violence and literacy, CAAG has launched an innovative tutoring project for kindergartners at Rothenberg School. Teach a child to read and he will have a chance in life!

The Status of Women Action Group
The Status of Women Action Group (SWAG) addresses a broad range of women’s empowerment issues. Members have met to discuss the changing role of feminism and served as advocates for women living in poverty. This year, the group has been meeting at the Contact Center to create bonds of trust and solidarity with women in Over-the-Rhine so that they can better meet their needs, achieve their dreams, and participate in the decisions that shape their neighborhoods. Periodically, the group organizes workshops in Participatory Leadership to empower women city wide.
The Environmental Improvement Action Group
The Environmental Improvement Action Group works on projects that improve the urban environment and increase eco-awareness. Through town forums and technical workshops, WCC as part of the Growing Green & Healthy Schools Network, was instrumental in the CPS’ commitment to green our new school and the Ohio School Facilities’ resolution to require new construction project to meet higher energy efficiency and environmental standards. This will affect hundreds of new and renovated school projects throughout Ohio. Currently, we are working with CPS to design a green curriculum for our new green schools and to back the levies. We support the work of the Mill Creek Restoration Project and the installation of Laughing Brook wetland project at Salway Park, and we support the work of the Mayor’s Climate Protection Task Force on energy conservation, transportation, waste and air quality, land use, and outreach to governments, organizations, businesses, and citizens.
